T.I. let it loose on philly radio today explaining the music business. He gave hisself as an example to success. Have a QUALITY song or two. Let your peoples hear it. Pass it to your local barber shops. Let your friends create a buzz. Let the DJs on the radio wonder why they not spinning your record. T.I. mentioned how when he in certain cities, he's listening to the radio for new talent! That's CRAZY! He said geting a demo to someone is one way, but not the only way. Wow...

Hydrogen Review

Ok, Since Hydrogen feels like Fruity loops, I figure i'll give it a try...Not bad. I don't have a desktop anymore so i can't really tell the sound quality yet. I went to www.hydrogen-music.org and downloaded the kits from there, but I'm sure you could google "hydrogen drumkits" to get some more.

The first screenshot shows the pattern editor. It's little empty looking but you get use to it. There you see the drumkit to be used as well as the area where instruments are to be added.

Screenshot 2 is of the song window where you paste and arrange your made patterns. I haven't planned to find out all of the uses for hydrogen because right now, I just want to use it for drum sequencing. When I used Windows, I would Fruity loops for beats and Acid pro for samples vocals and master mixdowns. I plan to used the same format on Linux too, so Muse, Audacity,Rosegarden and/or Ardour is the next step...

Ubuntu Studio Review

Wow!
Finally moved to Linux for good. Ubuntu Studio to be exact...I tried to download it two weeks ago but the site must have been down or something. The version has everything when it comes to hardware and software. It was a big step to take because it was not a live CD, I could not test drive it first. After chopping my laptop hard drive in half, I followed the easy instructions and let it format and install. When I restarted it, everything just worked. Even though I love Knoppix, my cheap linksys card wasn't working on it. Ubuntu Studio has great software too. The only programs I had to add was VLC and the DEMOCRACY player for video pod-casts. I do recommend updating your software via MENU/System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager.

Aiiight! Back to the beats. My favorite program so far is called HYDROGEN. It kinda looks like FRUITY LOOPS but with a different feel. I was able to make a drum pattern easily and save it as a wave file. The only downside so far is that I coudn't add my own drum kits to it, I had to go online and google hydrogen kits. I'll fix that soon enough.
The three programs I can't wait to really use is ROSEGARDEN , ARDOUR and MUSE. These are the multitrack recorders right here and the main attraction for this operating system...I'm supposed to do a session soon with a swp/Delaware rapper so I'll keep you posted on that...

Also, yeah I changed the format around for my blog...Trying to get that WEB 2.0 look ya dig!!!

Producing Music With Linux part 3

Really, after Vista came out I've been fixing alot of computers with no sound. It's usually because of the drivers being updated for Vista. This can be annoying to someone on a tight schedule. Once again it looks like Linux might be the better choice since they have so many FREE music programs from sequencers to multi track recording. Yeah, it's been awhile but I'm still here. Hiphop is falling apart and I still care.... Jesse Jackson is using the current events as a springboard for diversity in the corporate entertainment world. NAS claimed Hiphop is dead. Imus did what millions of suburban kids are doing, imitating what they hear on the radio...Now that HIP HOP is really mainstream we should really think before we write. Chamillionare promises to make a profanity free album soon. Who's gonna follow that? We'll see....

Producers vs Musicians

On the flipside is the musician...Still rehearsing with sub par players in someone's basement. Still doing it part time b/c the work is good but the pay isn't. Still playing covers b/c that's what the club owners want. Still lugging around their guitar, amp and picking up the singer b/c they don't have a car yet. Still doing the work but not being in the advertised photo b/c of their ...well you know.

Decided to reminisce and listen to De La Soul is dead....Still as hot as the first day i heard it over 10 years ago. They changed their style on their SECOND album and still blew hinges OFF!!!! Come on can anyone else change their style and keep their audience nowadays????? We'll see.
Didn't like Jay-z's last album...The engineering was different. Was genius there? I gotta check b/c they made it too intimate. I didn't want to hear his breathing and stuff. Maybe that was done to stop the King of DC. Don't know but it made the album uncomfortable for me...

Uhh mixtapes have gotten huge lately(gotten?). My manager rocks mixtapes in his Navi daily. He believes the future is somewhere on those CD's he picks up in South Philly. Maybe he's right... I believe he's right but there's so many Mixtapes out there,who deserves to be discovered? It's up to YOU basically...Google mixtapes and grab a torrent downloader...Matter of fact, make a mixtape and use the internet to promote yourself!!!

"Philadelphia born rapper Gillie Da Kid was arrested on Tuesday (Feb. 6), after authorities learned he was allegedly running two drug houses. Gillie and five associates were arrested, after authorities received a tip and searched the houses on Passmore Street in Philadelphia. Police confiscated 89 pounds of marijuana worth $404,000. All five were charged with conspiracy and possessing narcotics with intent to deliver. "They were supplying numerous drug dealers all over the city, not just in the Northeast," Sgt. Robert Friel said. Police are also investigating another house in the area, where officers confiscated $6 million in cocaine in November.

Wow! boy am I late!...Ok, sorry but I had a good excuse. I was cruising the net looking for the Ciara/R.Kelly remix and lost track of time. Still didn't find it... But I did Find Mims. Well "I" didn't find em...I wish I did though. He's not attacking the beat on "This is why I'm hot", but he is letting it breath. That's a good quality sometimes. Like How Busta adapts to the beat to give it a life of it's own...Not like Papoose who seems to try too hard...

Took my 5 year old to his first Sixers Game last Tuesday... He liked it but wasn't feeling the performance after...103 the beat/beast gave a little concert featuring Lloyd of MURDER INC. It was ok. He kept smiling as people got up and left in the middle of his performance and Irv Gotti was there too. I think it's a great idea since you capture the young sports crowd as well as the suburbians still hanging around. Of course it was free but that's the price of promotion...Will I buy his CD? No, the same as I didn't cop Usher's CD when he was young... The only young voice I paid money for was Mario. His first CD was classic and his second was even better...

This is monumental!!!! As we discussed about for months ago on our Podcast(told yall!), this might have been a mistake if they get charged for bootlegging. Of course a mixtape is NOT a copy of the artist whole album but maybe now we'll know for sure if mixtapes without barcodes are illegal too. For real though how do mixtape DJs get their exclusives, off the radio? NO! (Unless you really Ghetto!) They RECEIVE hot records from the artist or manager!!! It's a part of promotion!!!

Stores used to get raided for the same reasons and they couldn't figure out why the record labels didn't protect them...On my local radio station they said Lil Weezy (lil wayne) was basically saying the two DJs weren't doing proper business...That's funny since they pushed him for the most part...They say there's an angle to all this too, check www.allhiphop.com for that...Oh well, alls fair in hiphop . I also noticed the DVDs now say if you copy for profit or NONPROFIT, it's still copyright infringment. Streets is watching...

Really didn't want to write this particular blog with our Hiphop fathers dying this year then Nas saying Hiphop is dead, It's kinda depressing. 2007 hopefully can bring light to the subject of watered down radio records...I mean of course we want a couple of records off the CD to be radio ready, but not the whole CD, unless it's hot. I liked Luda's Runaway record b/c it was different for him, but everybody shouldn't be making this kind of track if they weren't doing it before...

Also, Ness was signed to BADBOY in May of 2006. Why didn't we know that? Where's the single or buzz or promo? Come on Diddy, Be a President and let your product make a profit. Don't bench your best hitter!!! Anything else... Yes! Big respect to Tego for putting the next level of Spanish music on the map. Ok... I feel like such a n00b(a person new to something...). When Cyssero sent his one sheet to everybody to get his CD in the stores, I was like "a one what?" I never heard of it, but it makes perfect sense! Say you are from Tokyo but you know your CD will sell in America, how do you get the USA market to bite? Send "One Sheets" to the Stores or better yet, have your fans do it. Ones sheets offer a quick bio of the Artist along with CD info and upc bar code. It even tells the store who to order it from and gives discounts for buying in bulk. The sheet goes on to describe the Artist's current marketing schedule/plan as well as the Album's key selling points... I'm Loving it! This is how it should be done... It's almost never what you know but who you know. Networking is a very important part to success. When you run into lawyers or accountants, keep their cards. Producers, rappers, engineers, studio owners, A&R, Managers... Never think that just because you don't need them now, you won't ever need them. Use that thing on your hip(not that), to keep contact emails and phone numbers. Keep 4 to 5 tracks on your new sidekick or MDA or blackjack or dash or 8125 or 8525. Just don't look the part, use the part. Be ready to kick a verse at anytime, you never know who you might meet at a show...A show? YES!!! Even if you aren't there to perform, be there to promote yourself...Keep your name in the game by being everywhere hiphop happens, not b/c you was fittin on shooting someone. I'm just saying.......

Oh, so I didn't shut down my myspace profile after I opened my Thestreetspace profile. Getting exposure on both is better than getting shine on just one...Besides, if Just Blaze didn't close his, neither will I...

The Linux program rose garden didn't work out too well. It wouldn't recognize my low-end sound card...Audacity worked good. I did my podcast(http://feeds.feedburner.com/tsohPodcast) with it without a problem. I also installed "Ardour" but i haven't had a chance to test it yet...

Why does Fat Joe change his name so often? He went to john blaze for a bit and then Joe Crack after Peedi came out...Is that why Peedi dropped the crack? LOL . Is Ness going to have a full length Album soon, or did I miss it?

I finally put linux on my laptop... I dual booted it so I still have XP in case something goes wrong. Wow is it faster than windows!!!! I just downloaded "Rosegarden", it's free software designed after CUBASE. It's pretty good but I have to adjust my volume properties... I still haven't used AUDACITY yet because I know it's good.

Just listened to ILLMATIC again. Still better than most albums out there now. Can't wait for Talib's next album...Can wait for Tyrese's double CD. Haven't heard a single on the east coast yet. Maybe he's just gettitng play in Cali...I mean I heard him singing on Chingy's song but can he rap? Omarion CD will be good. TUG has a different sound that uses a lot of drums and that's always good. He can sing way better than Usher at his age. I don't judge dancing because because after MJ came out it was a wrap...

How To Promote Your Single...Lesson 2

About once a month I receive emails with a new single, links and current Cashflow events... I didn't sign up for this but I'm not annoyed either b/c he really sounds good! I don't usually rep Harlem(except Cam b4 the Jayz diss...), but this young lion is really making waves... So what's the point in today's lesson? Network, get a mailing list of influential people and keep them in the loop with new singles and current events. Once this dude gets on MTV, money & fame will be next, that's why we doing this right???

It's about making sure everybody eats...Kurupt/Young Gotti is from Philly and although he is with the Dogg Pound, He lately reps Philly too. The dude in question though is Cyserro... He's from Philly and made a local name for himself. Matter fact he made The Game take notice and sign him to "The Black Wall

Hiphop Is Alive !?!

Well well well, I'm not one for reminiscing. I like enjoying the moment and moving on. My favorite rapper was Dres from Black Sheep. He rapped about what I was into , girls. I did listen also to KRS-One and PE, De La, KMD, LONS, Pete Rock and CL Smooth . They all got heavy rotation in whatever I could listen with growin up...I said that to say this, trying to recapture that golden age is impossible and it sounds uncreative when some try. Why would I want to produce music sounding like Primo or Pete Rock in their prime????
Lupe Fiasco has a big sound that manages to tie all 8 producers together. His lyrical style is familiar yet new(Talib Kwali is my FAVORITE rapper...). Coming from Chi-Town, I thought he'd sound like 'Ye but I was thankfully wrong.

I was born in North Carolina...(Common is playing on the tv as I write this..) so I was really looking forward to hearing Little Brother's latest Album. I like it, it has a comfortable sound. It felt like eating two plates of spaghetti, full of flavor and filling. I didn't feel like I wanted more, but, it was kinda annoying hearing the sound I heard 13 years ago. 9th Wonder is a Genius for replicating a warm sound using the computer.
I'm curious to hear what's next with this resurgence of conscience rap. It reminds me of the neo-soul I haven't heard lately....

Hiphop is Dead?

Technically NAS is right. During it's heyday, Mainstream America called an off shoot of Hiphop Gangsta Rap... Who made up that label? I don't know but it stuck starting with Schoolly D and brought to popularity with Dre's THE CHRONIC... after that it was cool to rap about the negative things we see in our hood. Geezy was on a radio interview this week in philly and he was upset about NAS and Monie Love's idea of hiphop being dead... Hiphop is reality, some choose to highlight the positive side of life and some choose the negative. What I try to tell our young ones is that just because you see the negative everyday doesn't make it right or normal. It's still negative and should be avoided. Hiphop is life and we have the choice to listen to the negative side of it or the positive side of it. Sadly enough, radio will play whatever is hot. Young Geezy is Hiphop as well as NAS, Live with it...

Free/Libre/Open-Source Software, or FLOSS, is an alternative term for free software. Why use open-source free software??? Say you are transferring your work from your windows computer to your mac to your Linux... What you don't use Linux??? You will soon. Trust me Windows computers are getting less and less reliable and now with the VISTA operating system coming, some software companies won't upgrade their software or it will take a long time and time is money. One good open source free software is Audacity. It's not high powered yet but it's not run of the mill either. I haven't used it exclusively yet, so after a thourough testing, I will let you know it's full capacity. Protools demand so many things and I'm not sure if there is a 64bit version. Logic also needs certain resources so it might not be wise to by a 64bit dual core computer until your favorite studio software can fully utilize it. If I'm wrong, let me know...

SP all Day!!!! I'm a fan of the broadstreet bully...He's actually very poetic, and the way he did the live performance years ago against Kiss...Like spoken word! Anyway, I heard years ago, he wasn't trying to put anybody else down and people was gettin jel. Then The ROC came out out with State Property and I was like "oh Mack does have a crew!" Then... the Dash/Jay-z meltdown happened and all the Philly rappers started saying they was just trying to eat and Rocafella lumped them with Beanz....Strange, where's the loyalty? I think the most sucessfull artist out of that mess will be Peedi although I liked Freeway's style b4 he changed...

This will be an on going article using many independent artists and techiniques...

First thing that counts is your SOUND!!! Don't push crap. Make sure it's the best mix you have and don't assume only "music" producers will here it and see your vision. To be sucessful, you must put your best unhurried foot first at all times...Most of the demos i receive are of good quality. For instance, CASHFLOW, an artist from Harlem has a great sound along with his rhymes. The singles are clear and EQ'd properly so you can go from the emailed attachment to your ride and still sound good. No fumbles or retakes, just an excellent mastered single. Even if it was done with a tape recorder and mike, do the best you can to get the levels right. Execs won't waste their time with product they can't sell 2moro. You have to be ready today...

Even though I voted for Talib, Common is connecting the dots between the backpackers and the mainstream. That's good, Right? I won't comment on Kanye's Sprint commercial...

I admit it. I don't like the Black eyed peas musically. The drum kits Will.I.AM uses and his whole Cali surfer sound is annoying. My Co-producer Majorpayne luvs him, which confuses me b/c Majorpayne is an east coast style producer!!!!!!! So confusing this is.

Although....From the bizness side, William is a GENIUS!!!!!! And now he has Fergie spinning off! Is BEP killing Hiphop? Not really. Their rhymes are tight and you hear or see them on almost every TV show. I think of them as a starter kit for the mainstream hiphop fan. Maybe after them the fan can listen to Tribe, De la, LONS, D-Block, Talib, Lupe and countless others...but not dip-set, lol.

I don't understand this music world sometimes. I have no problem with new models of business,artists creating labels, but if you are already running a successful company,why release an album? I understand Diddy's reasoning since he doesn't have a roster right now, but if you are running the biggest hiphop machine, why are you releasing an album? More power to him... No need to review it, it's hot.

I would like to check Ecks from Washington D.C. latest work. His earlier mixtapes sounded a lot like Jay-Z and I'm anxious to here him grow...Shout out to Jade Foxx in Miami doing her thing and Majorpayne and Oxymoron From South West Philly...

Please comment and help me understand why Jay-Z released another album and why Peedi came at Juelz right b4 his album drops.

This is Solace the Soul-ace from the sound of hiphop podcast... Even though my audio equipment needs a tune-up badly, i still have questions and comments about our music today...I'll probably post close to everyday since people and artists keep ticking me off!!!!

Anyways, i want to thank everybody across the globe for supporting my podcast and I promise to still be informative and entertaining...just without sound....I better do one last podcast to help my audience in the transition.
